I spent a lot of time at various airports over the past week and had plenty of time to surf the web.  Here are a few sites that helped me to pass the time while I waited between flights….

This weekend I am taking a quick road trip to Jonesboro to watch rugby (Go Badgers!) with a pitstop in Memphis for some BBQ. How about you?  Any travel plans this weekend?  Or will you surf the web instead?  I’d love to know…

Blinding me with science…

The Red House surrounded by Summer Green

One of the things I do to keep the lights on is plan and execute events.  Over the years I have organized everything from an intimate dinner for 8 to an overnight in the woods for 300.  I am a big believer in the ‘teach a man to fish’ parable and enjoy working with clients to achieve their event vision. After months of working with the TGCA planning committee their inaugural Educational Conference dreams became reality last Friday… Continue reading “Blinding me with science…”

A-Man-Called-Ove

It’s been a busy few weeks for me, getting children off to college at opposite ends of the country and preparing for a corporate event I am organizing this weekend.  I haven’t had much free time but did manage to read a bit each day.  I just finished ‘A Man Called Ove‘, a book which surprised me twice and had me crying upon reading the last word.  I can’t recall the last time I’ve had such an emotional reaction to a book and continue to think about Ove’s story, which I found deeply touching. Have you read this book?  I recommend it if you haven’t.

Here are a few things capturing my attention this weekend…

…hope you’ve found something that captures your attention too!

Some Girls

thegirls

How serendipitous that I finished reading Emma Cline’s ‘The Girls’ on the same day that California Governor Jerry ‘Moonbeam’ Brown rejected parole for one of the original ‘girls’, Leslie Van Houten.

The novel is loosely based on Charlie Manson’s most fervid female followers and explores the lifelong guilt and self-imposed imprisonment of Evie, the main character who by chance meets ‘the girls’ one lazy summer afternoon and by luck avoids their fate one apocalyptic night.

Back in the late seventies I spent a lot of time at the Mars Hotel, hanging with ‘The Guys’. Jaz ruled over our core group of turned on/tuned in/dropped out wanderers and an ever changing cast of hangers-on and passers-through. Equal parts shyster, narcissist and carnival con man, Jaz could get just about anyone to do almost anything he asked. I’ve met a LOT of people in my life and to date none of them had that combination of magnetism and false messiah, which is one reason reading ‘The Girls’ resonated so deeply with me.

Have you read ‘The Girls’? I’d love to hear what you thought of the book…

May I introduce to you…

Vintage + Food = Grand Reopening of Live True Vintage

I love when I ‘discover’ a part of town that I’ve passed by a million times. I always wonder why I never took the time to stop before, especially when I stumble upon an awesome mom-and-pop restaurant or antique store  (remember my Lebanon trip?).  This past weekend I stumbled upon Live True Vintage, which just relocated from one side of town I rarely explore (Inglewood) to another (Rayon City)…

Mama’s in the kitchen…

The pie’s the thing

My younger son has been a cooking fool this summer.  He recently watched Matty Matheson prepare his Lemon Meringue Cheesecake Pie and decided to make the pie for his dad.  I did the shopping and he did the cooking, making everything from the pie crust to the meringue himself.  As you can see from the image above, it was quite the success  – and tasted even better!  He gets his cooking inspiration from The ChewTasty, The Food Network and Tastemade and our newest favorite – The Great British Baking Show. Have you seen the show?  My mom turned us on to Season 2 of GBBS last summer and we were instantly hooked.  Season 3 just began airing on PBS and once again, my son and I are ready, set, bake!  Do you like to cook or bake? What’s your favorite cooking show or thing to make?  I’d love to know…

Oh Daddy….

Happy Father’s Day

Hey Dad….how the hell are ya’?  Did I ever thank you for teaching me to always ask why? And for making sure that I never take ‘no’ for the answer? And thanks for providing me with an arsenal of tools I can use to survive on my own merits…you taught me to be a feminist long before it was socially acceptable to raise girls that way.  I miss those walks we used to take exploring our neighborhood and racing in Brand X…I really miss talking to you about life and the meaning of it all. I’m gonna let you go Dad, but before I hang up I just wanted to thank you again for being such a great dad to me and a wonderful granddad to those boys of ours.  I love you.

Gentle on my mind…

Just read and greatly enjoyed

‘The Buried Giant’ has been in my ‘to read’ pile since receiving it as a gift this past Christmas. I don’t know why it’s taken me so long to begin, but after finishing this fast-moving fable involving the price paid for war and peace and the cost of promises made and betrayed this book has leapt to the top of my 2016 favorite books list.  I will be re-reading this tale again, and soon.  Have read ‘The Buried Giant’?   If so, I’d love to hear what you thought of the book….
